In the early morning hours of April 1, 2021, the life of 44-year-old Louis Anglish Bryant Sr. came to a tragic end in his Birmingham, Alabama, home. Just before 4:30 a.m., a 911 call was made from his residence on Vanderbilt Road, reporting a shooting. When Birmingham police officers arrived, they found Bryant unresponsive on the floor with a gunshot wound. His partner of over a decade, Jasmine Drake, was at the scene, applying pressure to his wound.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple's three children, all under the age of 14, were present in the home at the time of the incident.
Initially, Drake claimed the shooting was accidental, stating that a gun had gone off while they were playing with it. However, her account of the events would soon change. A few days after Bryant's death, Jasmine Drake, then 29 years old, was arrested and charged with capital murder. During police questioning, she alleged that she had shot Bryant in self-defense. She claimed that on the night of the shooting, Bryant had accused her of infidelity, leading to a violent altercation where he allegedly hit her and threatened her with a gun. Drake asserted that she grabbed another gun and, in fear for her life, shot him as he advanced toward her. She spent five weeks in jail before being released on a $100,000 bond.
The case took a surprising turn as it headed toward trial in April 2024. Evidence supporting Drake's claim of self-defense began to surface, including text messages she had sent about alleged abuse and diary entries from her oldest daughter describing abuse toward her mother. In a remarkable development, members of Louis Bryant's own family came forward to support Drake's claims. They testified before a Jefferson County judge that they believed she had acted to protect herself. Following this testimony and a review of the case facts, the prosecution dropped the capital murder charge against her. A judge officially dismissed the charge with prejudice, meaning the case cannot be refiled.
