A dispute behind a downtown apartment building in the early hours of a Monday morning ended the life of David Mendoza-Fernandez, a 40-year-old man from Hartford, Connecticut. He lived on Clifford Street in the city, and his sudden death on October 26, 2026, left a community grappling with another act of violence.
The incident unfolded just before 2 a.m. in a busy area of Hartford, near City Hall, the Connecticut Convention Center, and several well-known restaurants.
The Hartford Police Department was alerted to trouble at 1:56 a.m. when its ShotSpotter system detected gunfire and dispatchers began receiving numerous 911 calls reporting a person shot on Arch Street. Officers were sent to the rear of an apartment building at 81 Arch Street, where they discovered a chaotic scene.
Police found David Mendoza-Fernandez on the ground, unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigators later determined that the shooting stemmed from a large fight or disagreement that had broken out. The first officer who reached him immediately began performing chest compressions, providing critical lifesaving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. Mendoza-Fernandez was then rushed to an area hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
While some officers were rendering aid, others secured the scene and began speaking with multiple witnesses who saw the shooting occur. They provided a description of the shooter’s vehicle, which was quickly broadcast to other officers in the area. The swift communication paid off. About a quarter-mile from the scene, two officers spotted the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Charter Oak Avenue and Main Street.
The stop was made without a chase or any further incident, and the driver was taken into custody. “The officer did a great job paying attention, listening to the radio and stuff, and stopped that vehicle,” Hartford police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said. The suspect was detained and transported to police headquarters to be interviewed by detectives. Police later said they believed at least one person involved in the dispute lived in the apartment building at 81 Arch Street.
The investigation was taken over by the Hartford Police Department’s Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions. While they had a suspect in custody, authorities did not immediately release the person's identity or what charges would be filed. Lt. Boisvert expressed confidence in the arrest, telling reporters, “We’re confident that we do have the individual who shot. Again, we have to interview him and find out exactly why.” He added that investigators were still working to understand precisely what led to the deadly confrontation.
The area around Arch Street and the intersection where the traffic stop occurred were closed for hours as investigators collected evidence and processed the scenes. Police assured the public that there was no ongoing threat related to the incident. As of late October 2026, the investigation into the death of David Mendoza-Fernandez was active and ongoing as the case proceeded through the judicial system.
Authorities have asked that anyone with additional information about the shooting contact the Hartford Police Department's tip line at 860-722-TIPS (8477).
