Lamarr Box Jr., a 21-year-old man from East St. Louis, died after a violent shooting on April 3, 2026, in the Soulard neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. The shooting unfolded around 6 p.m. at a gas station near South 7th Street and Russell Boulevard, identified in one report as 710 Russell Boulevard. What began as a confrontation inside or around the store escalated into a gunfight, with bullets fired both inside the business and in the parking lot.
According to police accounts cited
in local reporting, Box ran from the store as the gunfire erupted and got into an Audi Q7 that he had arrived in. After he was shot, he managed to drive away from the gas station, but he did not get far. A few blocks later, the vehicle crashed near Broadway and Lami Street. Box was taken to St. Louis University Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Investigators described the scene as chaotic and heavily marked by gunfire. Court documents cited by local media said detectives found about 50 fired cartridge casings in the gas station parking lot and inside the store. Two other men, ages 26 and 29, were also wounded during the shootout and later arrived at a hospital. Both survived. Police said the Soulard shooting was one of several violent incidents across St. Louis during the Easter weekend, but authorities stated the shootings were not believed to be connected.
An arrest and charges followed nearly two weeks later. Prosecutors charged Jabril L. Olivaria, 24, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Box's death. Police alleged that Olivaria was not inside the store during the initial gunfight, but saw Box run out, chased him, and fired several shots as Box drove away. The charges filed against Olivaria were tied to Box's killing; reports noted that the charges did not include assault counts for the two other wounded men.
Box's death left family and friends mourning a life cut short just days before what would have been his birthday. Obituary information listed him as Lamarr C. Box Jr., born April 20, 2004, and said he died on April 3, 2026. Services were held on April 18, 2026, at Love Church in Belleville, Illinois, with arrangements under Serenity Memorial Chapel.
