In what began as a mundane drive home, a fatal encounter unfolded, claiming the life of 53-year-old Edward Johnson Jr., a Black male from north St. Louis County. On the morning of January 23, 2026, Johnson was driving with his 16-year-old daughter near the intersection of West Florissant Avenue and Canfield Drive. The situation escalated when Johnson honked his car horn at two pedestrians who were obstructing the road.
This simple act of caution was met with unexpected aggression.
As Johnson drove past, both individuals brandished firearms, and one of them opened fire, striking Johnson. The gunshot wound caused him to lose control of his vehicle, which then crashed into a nearby residence at Ellison and Canfield drives. Despite being rushed to a hospital, Edward Johnson Jr. succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. His daughter, who witnessed the entire traumatic event, was physically unharmed. Strangers at the scene comforted the teenager until police arrived.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a nearby apartment complex. Based on witness statements, including a description of the shooter's clothing provided by Johnson's daughter, authorities obtained a search warrant. Inside an apartment, they discovered clothing matching the description and a 9mm handgun believed to be the murder weapon.
This evidence led to the arrest of Deandre U. Spruill Jr., a 26-year-old resident of Ferguson. Police reported that Spruill admitted to the shooting. He has since been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The identity of the second pedestrian who was with Spruill at the time of the incident is still under investigation by law enforcement.
