On the evening of Friday, January 3, 2025, a violent domestic dispute culminated in tragedy at a residence in the 1200 block of Laire Drive in Bellefontaine Neighbors, St. Louis County, Missouri. Authorities were summoned to the scene around 8:40 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, 30-year-old male Gerrick Fortenberry, lying on the ground and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
First responders hastily transported him to a nearby hospital for life-saving treatment; however, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The investigation, led by the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons, revealed that the events leading up to the homicide involved a prolonged conflict between the victim and his younger brother, Tyrone Johnson. According to police reports and probable cause statements, the two men had been arguing intermittently throughout the day regarding financial matters. A witness at the scene reported seeing Fortenberry exit the front door of the home, followed moments later by the sound of gunfire. Witnesses then observed Fortenberry unconscious and bleeding on the ground while Johnson allegedly entered a Dodge Charger and fled the area.
Law enforcement officers located 28-year-old Tyrone Johnson approximately one hour after the shooting. He was found inside his vehicle with a firearm in plain view and was subsequently taken into custody. During an interview with detectives, Johnson reportedly admitted to being present at the time his brother was shot. Following the investigation, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Johnson with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was ordered held on a $2 million cash-only bond.
