In the summer of 2025, the life of 39-year-old Rogereale M. 'Reese' Howard was cut short in Utica, New York. On the night of July 4th, what should have been a festive holiday turned into a scene of violence at the corner of James Street and Howard Avenue. Howard was fatally shot, marking a tragic end to a life that had been deeply rooted in the Utica community. Born in Utica on August 6, 1985, he was a graduate of T.R.
Proctor High School and a dedicated employee at the Oneida Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing for over 17 years.
The aftermath of the shooting was chaotic. When emergency crews arrived, they were met by a large and unruly crowd. The hostility from the crowd reportedly escalated to the point of physical interference, hampering the efforts of both Utica police and fire personnel to reach Howard and provide medical aid. In the midst of the confrontation, a Utica police officer sustained injuries and required hospitalization. In addition to Howard's death, another individual arrived at a local hospital with a non-fatal gunshot wound to the leg, adding another layer to the violent events of that evening.
The investigation into Howard's death continued for over two months, culminating in a significant development in September. An Oneida County Grand Jury handed down an indictment against 20-year-old Jarian Loveday of Utica. Loveday was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Rogereale Howard. Authorities alleged that Loveday was the one who fired the weapon that resulted in Howard's death, bringing a measure of progress to a case that had shaken the community.
