On Friday, July 4, 2025, around 10:40 p.m., Utica police and fire crews were called to the intersection of James Street and Howard Avenue, where they found Rogereale Howard, 39, wounded by gunfire and surrounded by a large, agitated crowd. As first responders tried to reach the victim, some in the crowd physically interfered, and a Utica police officer was injured amid the confrontation before crews managed to move Rogereale Howard into an ambulance.
