On a summer evening in Utica, New York, the life of 56-year-old Gary McCorkle was tragically cut short. On July 3, 2021, McCorkle was shot and killed at a residence on Rutger Street. The incident was one of two homicides that occurred in the city over the holiday weekend, leaving the community shaken. McCorkle, a male resident of Utica and Rome, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Utica Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide.
Their efforts led them to identify a suspect, and after a months-long investigation, an arrest was made on October 4, 2021. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, 20-year-old Nikyro Smith-Rucker of Utica was taken into custody at a residence on Scott Street. Smith-Rucker was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with McCorkle's death.
The legal proceedings against Nikyro Smith-Rucker culminated in a conviction. In October 2022, a jury found him guilty of murder in the second degree. The trial revealed that the fatal shooting occurred during an attempted robbery. In December 2022, Smith-Rucker was sentenced to a term of 20 years to life in state prison for his role in the death of Gary McCorkle, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had cast a shadow over the city.
