Melissa Thomas, a 29-year-old African American woman, was tragically murdered on January 31, 1996, in Opelousas, Louisiana. She had left her family’s home to purchase cigarettes at a nearby gas station but never returned. Her body was later discovered in a cemetery across the street from the store, lying face-down with scratch marks on her neck, leading investigators to believe she had been strangled.
