In the quiet community of Opelousas, Louisiana, the life of 18-year-old Mareya Henry, a young Black woman, was tragically cut short on the evening of October 12, 2025. Investigators were called to the 1000 block of Hashim Street, where they discovered the scene of a fatal shooting. As authorities began their work, collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses, the devastating news of the young woman's death began to spread, leaving a family and community in mourning for a life that had just
begun.
In the days that followed, the Opelousas Police Department identified a suspect in the homicide: 21-year-old Kera Vitatoe. The investigation revealed that Vitatoe and Henry had been in a romantic relationship, a detail that added another layer of tragedy to the case. It was also discovered that this was not the first instance of violence between the two; Vitatoe had a prior arrest for committing battery against Henry in another jurisdiction. With mounting evidence pointing to her as the person responsible for the killing, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Vitatoe. She was considered armed and dangerous, prompting a public plea for information regarding her whereabouts.
The search for Kera Vitatoe came to an end when she surrendered to authorities in Lake Charles. She was taken into custody and awaited extradition back to Opelousas to face the charges against her. A St. Landry Parish grand jury later indicted Vitatoe on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. In January 2026, she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
