On the evening of April 23, 2024, in Opelousas, Louisiana, 23-year-old Chanterria Albert, a Black/African American female, was fatally wounded in a shooting. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Park Avenue, where a barrage of approximately 30 shots was reportedly fired. When Opelousas Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they discovered multiple shell casings, but the victims had already been transported to a local hospital.
At the hospital,
Chanterria Albert, affectionately known as “Mackey,” succumbed to her injuries. A second individual was also wounded in the shooting but was reported to be in stable condition. The news of Albert's death sent ripples of grief through the community, particularly within the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, where she had been employed as a corrections deputy since May 10, 2022. She had the unique experience of working alongside her mother, Cherika Albert, at the sheriff's office.
In the wake of the shooting, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz expressed profound sorrow, stating, "My entire staff and I are mourning the loss of one of our family members as a result of senseless gun violence." The Opelousas Police Department is leading the investigation into the homicide, with assistance from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.
As of now, the investigation into Chanterria Albert's death is ongoing, and no arrests have been made. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in the case. Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and have provided multiple avenues for submitting tips, including directly to the Opelousas Police Department or anonymously through Crime Stoppers, where a cash reward is offered for information leading to an arrest.
