In the quiet suburban neighborhood of Gwynn Oak, Maryland, a history of simmering aggression and paranoia culminated in a tragic and violent outburst on May 8, 2021, claiming the life of 41-year-old Ismael Quintanilla. A hardworking immigrant and loving father, he was remembered for his dedication to his family.
On that Saturday morning, the peace of the residential street was shattered when 56-year-old Everton Brown, a neighbor with a known history of erratic and threatening behavior,
forced his way into the Quintanilla home. Inside, Brown, armed with a handgun and a large knife, brutally attacked Ismael, stabbing and shooting him. The violence that erupted was the tragic result of what neighbors described as years of living in fear of Brown, who was known for his aggression and accusations of being under surveillance.
As the chaos unfolded, Ismael's wife, 37-year-old Sara Alacote, attempted to flee the horrific scene, but Brown chased her outside and fatally shot her multiple times. The deadly rampage continued as Brown also shot two other neighbors who had emerged from their home, killing 24-year-old Sagar Ghimire. In the midst of his violent spree, Brown also set his own residence ablaze, with the resulting fire causing his and an adjacent home to collapse.
Responding to numerous calls about an active shooter and a fire, Baltimore County police officers arrived to find a scene of carnage. They encountered Everton Brown in the parking lot and, after he failed to comply with their commands, four officers fired at him. Brown was taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A subsequent search of one of Brown's vehicles uncovered several homemade explosive devices. The Quintanillas' 17-year-old son was the sole survivor of the attack in their home. The incident left the community reeling and mourning the senseless loss of three lives, with no motive provided beyond the perpetrator's long-documented history of aggression and paranoia.
