In the quiet suburban community of Gwynn Oak, Maryland, a young man's promising future was tragically cut short in a sudden act of violence. Sagar Ghimire, a 24-year-old Nepalese man, had only recently moved to the neighborhood, filled with aspirations of pursuing a master's degree. A recent graduate of Claflin University, he was described by his family as a kind, generous, and bright individual who was the backbone of his family and always put them first.
He had a passion for making a difference in his home country of Nepal and had dreams of improving the lives of others.
On the morning of May 8, 2021, the peace of the Woodlawn complex was shattered by a chaotic and violent rampage. Everton Brown, a 56-year-old neighbor of Ghimire, began a shooting spree after setting his own home on fire. Attracted by the commotion, Sagar Ghimire stepped out of his residence to see what was happening and was tragically shot by Brown. He was one of three victims killed in the senseless attack, which also claimed the lives of Ismael Quintanilla and Sara Alacote.
The perpetrator, Everton Brown, was subsequently shot and killed by responding police officers. Investigations into the incident revealed a history of troubling and paranoid behavior from Brown, who believed the government was spying on him. His family had reportedly been concerned about his mental state. While Brown legally owned two handguns, the tragedy raised questions about whether the incident could have been prevented. For the Ghimire family, the loss of their beloved Sagar was an unimaginable and devastating blow, leaving them to mourn a bright light extinguished far too soon.
