Jaward David Hannah, an 81-year-old Black male, was a beloved figure in his Gwynn Oak, Maryland community, where he had lived for over five decades. Neighbors described him as a 'pillar in the community' and a kind, hardworking man who would help anyone. His quiet life came to a tragic and violent end on November 10, 2023, when he was found dead in the garage of his home on Kelox Road.
The discovery was grim; Hannah was found handcuffed, lying in a pool of blood, having sustained a fatal
gunshot wound to the head. His pockets had been turned out, and his wallet was missing, indicating that robbery was a likely motive. The shocking death of the elderly man, who was last seen working on his carport the day before he was killed, sent ripples of fear and grief through the tight-knit Powhatan Farms community. Friends and neighbors were left heartbroken and stunned that such a heinous crime could occur in their peaceful neighborhood.
The Baltimore County Police launched an intensive investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to 34-year-old Tavon D. Smith. A crucial tip came from Smith's own wife, who informed police of his possible involvement. Further investigation uncovered damning evidence, including DNA found on Hannah's clothing that matched Smith's. A search of Smith's cellphone revealed pictures of a. 22 caliber handgun, consistent with the projectile recovered from the victim, as well as images of Smith wearing a police vest.
In January 2024, Tavon D. Smith was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, and possession of a firearm with a felony conviction. He is currently being held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center. It was later revealed that at the time of Hannah's murder, Smith had an outstanding arrest warrant for a domestic violence incident. Critics have questioned whether a more timely service of that warrant could have prevented the tragic death of Jaward David Hannah.
