In the autumn of 1989, the city of Kansas City, Missouri, was gripped by a series of terrifying events that would leave a lasting scar on the community. Among the victims of this tragic period was Tresa Williams, a 21-year-old Black female whose life was cut short on October 22, 1989. Her body was discovered at 4136 Euclid Avenue, another victim in a string of brutal murders that had been plaguing the area.
Tresa Williams was one of six women who fell prey to the serial killer Ray Shawn Jackson, who would come to be known as the "Gillham Park Strangler." Over a harrowing seven-month period between September 1989 and April 1990, Jackson terrorized the city, his victims often being prostitutes whose bodies were discarded in or around the midtown area of Gillham Park. The discovery of each new victim deepened the sense of fear and urgency for law enforcement to find the person responsible.
The investigation into the murders culminated in the arrest of Ray Shawn Jackson. Following his apprehension in April 1990, he confessed to the killings of the six women, including Tresa Williams. Jackson was subsequently convicted on six counts of first-degree murder. For his crimes, he received a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, ensuring that he would no longer pose a threat to the community.
