Nevada N. Mosley, a 38-year-old woman, was fatally shot on August 1, 2026, inside a residence on Agnes Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Police were dispatched to the home shortly before 7 a.m. after a report of gunfire. When officers entered the residence, they found Mosley in a back bedroom suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported her to Research Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators processing the bedroom recovered multiple spent 9mm shell casings, a spent bullet and a bullet fragment, along with paperwork belonging to Mosley and a man identified as Antwon Shirley. Police also documented damage to a door and its locking mechanism that appeared consistent with the door having been forcibly kicked in.
Authorities said Mosley and Shirley had been in a relationship, and investigators quickly focused on Shirley after speaking with children and other witnesses who were inside or associated with the home. According to accounts contained in the probable-cause investigation, one child was awake when the confrontation unfolded and reported seeing Shirley point a firearm at Mosley while she was in bed. Mosley reportedly attempted to get out of bed and struck her head on a nearby dresser before gunfire erupted. Three shots were heard, and the child fled the bedroom to seek help. Other children in the house reportedly identified Shirley as the person responsible for shooting their mother.
Witnesses told investigators that the relationship between Mosley and Shirley had recently become troubled. One person described Shirley as very jealous and said the couple had not been getting along. Mosley had reportedly asked Shirley to return the keys to her residence. Investigators also developed evidence indicating that Shirley had been at or near the home around the time of the shooting, including surveillance information associated with his vehicle.
After the shooting, Shirley allegedly contacted people he knew and made statements indicating that he had done something serious. According to the probable-cause allegations, he told a relative that he had lost control and shot Mosley and said on more than one occasion that he intended to surrender because authorities would be looking for him. Investigators also alleged that before turning himself in, Shirley took steps that could have made him more difficult to locate, including disposing of his cellphone and distancing himself from a vehicle registered to him.
Antwon Shirley, 43, surrendered to Kansas City police on August 2, the day after Mosley was killed. Jackson County prosecutors subsequently charged him with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, first-degree burglary, unlawful possession of a firearm and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The burglary allegation is connected to evidence that parts of the residence had apparently been forcibly entered, while the child-endangerment counts stem from children allegedly being present during the violent confrontation.
Following his arrest, Shirley was held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Court reporting indicated that a preliminary hearing was scheduled for September 2, 2026. As of the most recent publicly available reporting, the case remained pending, and there had been no trial or conviction. The criminal charges are accusations, and Shirley is presumed innocent unless he is found guilty or enters a guilty plea.
