A normal Saturday night sleepover turned into a scene of tragedy on August 9, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri. Inside a home on Norton Avenue, 16-year-old Traelynn Sibley, a female just days away from starting her junior year of high school, was spending time with friends. The group was enjoying a typical evening; two young women were doing each other's hair at a vanity near the front door, while others played video games in the living room. A toddler was also present in the house at the time.
Suddenly, the evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire as bullets ripped through the front of the residence.
One of the shots struck Traelynn in the throat. She ran to a bathroom where she collapsed. Emergency services were called to the home just after 10 p.m., and they found her unresponsive. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead by medical personnel. The investigation revealed that the shots were fired from a vehicle that was moving southbound past the house. It quickly became clear to detectives that the high school student was not the intended target of the violent act that ended her life.
The investigation led police to 21-year-old Bailey Lewis. Detectives used surveillance footage that captured her 2025 Hyundai Elantra driving to and from the scene to connect her to the crime. The motive for the shooting appears to stem from a dispute Lewis had with another woman who was inside the home that night. This intended target, a former friend of Lewis, told investigators they had a falling out months prior over an alleged theft and another incident at a gas station. Investigators also linked Lewis to another shooting that occurred about 15 minutes before the one that killed Traelynn.
Bailey Lewis was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and accessory to armed criminal action. She was taken into custody and held at the Jackson County Detention Center on a $400,000 bond. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young girl, remembered by loved ones as a 'beautiful, bright, sunny girl,' whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence aimed at someone else.
