On the evening of March 10, 2003, Detective Rodney J. Andrews, a 34-year-old Black male, was tragically killed during an undercover firearms operation in Staten Island, New York. Working alongside his partner, Detective James V. Nemorin, Andrews was attempting to purchase a Tec-9 submachine gun as part of a 'buy-and-bust' operation. The detectives were in their vehicle with two suspects, Ronell Wilson and Jessie Jacobus, when the deal took a fatal turn.
The initial plan was for the
detectives to buy the weapon from a man named Omar Green, who had previously sold them a firearm. However, the situation escalated when Wilson, one of the men in the car, became confrontational. After a heated argument, Wilson brandished a. 44-caliber handgun and shot Detective Andrews, who was in the passenger seat, in the head. He then turned the weapon on Detective Nemorin, who was driving, and shot him in the head as well. Both detectives died from their injuries. The suspects then pulled the detectives' bodies from the vehicle and fled the scene.
A massive manhunt was launched, and within 48 hours, the primary suspects were apprehended. Ronell Wilson, the gunman, was captured while attempting to flee in a livery cab. His accomplices, including Jessie Jacobus, Omar Green, and Mitchell Diaz, were also taken into custody. The investigation revealed that the suspects had intended to rob the undercover detectives of the $1,200 they had for the gun purchase.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Ronell Wilson was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death, the first federal death sentence handed down in New York since the reinstatement of the federal death penalty. His death sentence was later overturned on appeal, reinstated, and then overturned again. Wilson is now serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Other members of the Stapleton Crew, the gang associated with the suspects, also faced charges. Jessie Jacobus and Mitchell Diaz pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received sentences of 15 years to life. Additional members of the gang, Angel Rodriguez and Jamal Brown, also received prison sentences for their involvement.
