In the quiet city of Clarksville, Tennessee, the evening of May 12, 2016, was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 23-year-old James Tyler Wood, a White male. Responding to a call of shots fired at a residence on Lasalle Street, police discovered a grim scene. Wood was found deceased inside the home, a victim of a fatal gunshot wound. A second man, 41-year-old Cuong Ba Nguyen, was also found at the scene, critically injured. He was rushed to a local medical center but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly gained momentum. Authorities indicated that the shooting did not appear to be a random act of violence, suggesting the victims may have been targeted. Witnesses reported seeing two men fleeing the area in a white Cadillac shortly after the gunshots were heard. Thanks to valuable information from a CrimeStoppers tip and another anonymous call, the Clarksville Police Department was able to identify two suspects in connection with the killings. Gary Mathis Jr., of Oak Grove, Kentucky, and Domonic Combs Jr., of East St. Louis, Illinois, both 25 at the time, were identified as the alleged perpetrators. The two men were apprehended in Illinois and subsequently extradited to Montgomery County, Tennessee, to face charges. Both Mathis and Combs were charged with criminal homicide for their alleged roles in the deaths of James Tyler Wood and Cuong Ba Nguyen. The investigation continued as the judicial process began, with law enforcement still encouraging anyone with further information to come forward to help bring full closure to the case.
