In the early morning hours of February 1, 2021, a young woman named Mayte Aguirre, a 24-year-old female, was tragically killed in Nashville, Tennessee. The investigation into her death revealed a grim sequence of events that unfolded inside a car on Glenrose Avenue. Aguirre was a passenger in the front seat when she was fatally shot from behind. Following the shooting, two men, one of whom was later identified as Antwan Churchwell, dropped her off at Southern Hills Medical Center at 2:10 a.m.
and promptly fled the scene.
Homicide detectives quickly identified Churchwell, 28, as a person of interest and initially sought him for questioning. As the investigation progressed, an arrest warrant for murder was issued for Churchwell. Authorities stated that their investigation showed Churchwell shot Aguirre from the back seat of the vehicle. Prior to the murder charge, Churchwell was already wanted on multiple outstanding warrants for other offenses, including aggravated assault and domestic assault.
The search for Churchwell intensified, and he remained a fugitive for several weeks. His attempt to evade capture culminated in a dramatic series of events on a Saturday night. After being spotted by officers conducting surveillance, Churchwell fled. In a desperate bid to escape, he carjacked a vehicle at a convenience market, taking the 38-year-old owner's 16-year-old daughter and 31-year-old female cousin hostage inside. A police pursuit ensued, with Churchwell driving recklessly at high speeds into oncoming traffic. The chase ended when he crashed the car into a brick wall and attempted to flee on foot. An MNPD canine unit ultimately apprehended him after he jumped a fence. In addition to the criminal homicide charge for the death of Mayte Aguirre, Churchwell faced a multitude of new charges stemming from his capture, including carjacking, two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, and child endangerment.
