In Nashville, Tennessee, a 24-year-old woman named Michaela Jhane Carter found her life tragically cut short in a violent act that underscored a history of domestic turmoil. On November 15, 2021, at her family's home on Vanna Court in Antioch, a place she had sought for safety, the unthinkable occurred. Her estranged husband, 27-year-old James Leggett, against whom she had an active order of protection, forced his way into the residence. In the ensuing chaos, Leggett opened fire, critically wounding Michaela and injuring her stepfather, Mbuyi Tshibangu. While her stepfather survived his injuries, Michaela succumbed to wounds in her chest and leg eight days later in the hospital, on November 22, 2021, just one day shy of what would have been her 25th birthday.
The events that unfolded that November day were the culmination of a pattern of abuse and fear. Michaela had previously been assaulted by Leggett, who had a history of domestic violence. Despite the legal safeguard of an order of protection, Leggett continued to harass and threaten her. On the day of the shooting, Michaela and her mother had contacted the police, reporting that Leggett was outside a relative’s home with a gun. Officers responded to her home but left a short time before Leggett returned, kicked in the door, and began shooting. While on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, pleading for help, the fatal attack occurred.
In the aftermath of the shooting, James Leggett was apprehended and faced a litany of charges, including two counts of attempted murder, aggravated stalking, aggravated burglary, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Following Michaela's death, the attempted murder charge was upgraded to criminal homicide. He was held in jail on a $1.2 million bond. The tragedy also led to legal action against the Metro Nashville Police Department. Michaela's mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit, alleging that the police had failed to protect her daughter despite numerous pleas for help and evidence of Leggett's threats. The city of Nashville eventually agreed to a $250,000 settlement with her mother. The case against James Leggett, however, would never reach a trial. In July 2024, while in prison custody awaiting his day in court, Leggett died. The Department of Correction listed his death as being under investigation.
