In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 9, 2013, a night out in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, turned tragic for Octavia Monique Moe Jackson, a 27-year-old female. While sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle outside Club Shenanigan's on Plank Road, Jackson was struck by multiple gunshots to her upper torso. The driver of the vehicle, a friend of Jackson's, rushed her to Baton Rouge General Medical Center, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation into her death led to an arrest nearly a year later. On April 17, 2014, authorities booked 20-year-old Dennaryo Lathers on one count of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon in connection with the shooting that claimed Jackson's life.
Despite the initial arrest, the legal proceedings took a different turn. In August 2014, an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury reviewed the evidence against Lathers. After deliberation, the grand jury took no action, meaning they did not return an indictment to formally charge him with Jackson's murder. The district attorney at the time noted that there were not enough votes from the grand jury to proceed with the charges. However, it was also stated that the case could be brought back before a grand jury at a later date.
