In the early hours of a Saturday morning in March 2019, the life of 23-year-old Kemothy Starks Jr., a Black male from Bernice, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. The incident that led to his death unfolded just before 2:00 a.m. at the Rolex Lounge, a nightclub located off Highway 167 in Bernice. A shooting at the establishment resulted in Starks being fatally wounded.
Another individual was also struck by gunfire during the incident and was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in
critical condition. The events of that morning prompted an investigation by the Louisiana State Police, who quickly identified a suspect in the fatal shooting.
Within a few days of the incident, authorities made an arrest. Seandee Halsey, a 19-year-old, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the shooting. Halsey faced a charge of second-degree murder for the death of Kemothy Starks Jr. and an additional charge of attempted second-degree murder for the injuries sustained by the second victim.
