On the evening of Sunday, January 15, 2023, Leonard Olidge, a 42-year-old man, was fatally shot at the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and North Derbigny Street in New Orleans. First District officers responded to reports of a shooting just before 7:00 p.m. and discovered Olidge suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported by emergency medical services to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Known for his unmatched personality and his signature 'crow
bar' dance, Leonard was a beloved figure in his community. He was described as a loving, outgoing, and protective individual who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was also a father figure to his nieces and nephews. His death left his family and the broader New Orleans community in mourning.
In the days following the shooting, the New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Through their investigation, authorities identified an unknown Black male as the suspected perpetrator and released a picture to the public in an effort to identify and locate him. The NOPD urged anyone with information regarding the suspect's identity or whereabouts to contact the Homicide Unit or Crimestoppers.
Despite the initial identification of a person of interest, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests, charges, trials, or convictions in connection with the murder of Leonard Olidge. The case remains a painful and unresolved tragedy for his loved ones and the New Orleans community, who continue to seek justice for his untimely death.
