In the winter of 2014, a violent encounter in Augusta, Georgia, tragically cut short the life of 40-year-old Christopher Padgett, a white male. On the evening of Friday, January 24th, a shooting unfolded that would leave one man dead and another wounded, sparking a police investigation that would soon lead to an arrest.
The incident drew the attention of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, and their investigation quickly pointed to a suspect.
Within days of the fatal shooting, authorities took Carlos Heard into custody, charging him in connection with Padgett's death. The initial charge was for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, but this was soon upgraded to murder as the case against him solidified.
The legal proceedings against Carlos Heard for the murder of Christopher Padgett moved forward to a trial. During the trial, the prosecution presented its case, laying out the evidence that they believed proved Heard's guilt in the shooting. The defense, in turn, argued for his innocence.
