In the early evening of April 26, 2023, a violent encounter in Augusta, Georgia, claimed the life of 24-year-old Usaini Mohammed Yunusa Jr., a Black / African American male from Austell, Georgia. The incident unfolded around 6 p.m. outside The Estates at Perimeter on St. Andrews Drive. Yunusa was a passenger in a vehicle when individuals in another car opened fire into his vehicle.
The driver of the car Yunusa was in, identified as 20-year-old Kobe Burns of Augusta, sped away from the
scene. Authorities later determined Burns was intoxicated. His attempt to flee ended when he crashed the vehicle into trees at the intersection of Perimeter Parkway and Interstate Parkway. Usaini Mohammed Yunusa Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Burns sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He was subsequently charged with DUI-drugs and failure to maintain lane.
The investigation into Yunusa's death led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Kenneth 'Rot Ken' Williams, a 19-year-old from Augusta, was charged with murder and aggravated assault. Williams, an aspiring rapper, was already incarcerated on a probation violation at the time the charges were brought against him. He had a prior criminal history that included convictions for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, burglary, and theft by receiving stolen property.
A second suspect, 18-year-old Vinston Moultrie of Grovetown, was apprehended on Father's Day, June 18, 2023, following a high-speed chase through downtown Augusta. Moultrie was driving a stolen Jaguar when law enforcement attempted to stop him. He was eventually captured and faced charges of murder, aggravated assault, and other offenses related to the police chase. Records indicate that Yunusa also had a history of legal troubles, including prior convictions for weapons, drug dealing, and gang-related activities in Cobb County. He had also been arrested in Richmond County the summer before his death on charges related to drug dealing following a DUI-related chase.
