In the early morning hours of a Sunday in Augusta, Georgia, a young man known for his protective and caring nature was killed. Logan Etterle, a 21-year-old White male, was remembered by friends as a genuine person who was full of energy and would do anything for his loved ones. They said it was characteristic of him to stick up for people he cared about, noting that he had been previously injured in a 2020 shooting when he came to the defense of a teenager he felt was being mistreated.
On June 12, 2022, just before 2:00 a.m., Logan was at the intersection of 10th and Broad Streets in downtown Augusta, where a food truck often served the after-bar crowd. According to investigators, a physical altercation broke out between Logan and two other men. During the dispute, one of the men allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Logan in the upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office investigation quickly led to the identification of two suspects. One of the men, 31-year-old Keyon Smiley, was taken into custody and charged with murder. Investigators reported that Smiley had also been shot in the ankle during the altercation and was transported to a hospital for treatment before being jailed. He was also held on a parole violation.
Investigators identified the second suspect as 26-year-old D'Andre Tandy, who they alleged was the person who fired the gun. Initially, a warrant was issued for his arrest, and authorities began a search. On June 14, a multijurisdictional fugitive task force located and arrested Tandy in North Augusta, South Carolina.
Two days after his capture, Tandy was transferred to the Richmond County jail. He was charged with murder, possession of a firearm during a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. With both suspects in custody, the case against them was proceeding as of June 2022.
