On March 31, 2020, 44-year-old Kotwang DeShasta Childs, an African American woman, was tragically killed in Macon, Georgia. Her life was cut short during a violent altercation at a residence on Moreland Avenue, where she became one of three victims in a devastating triple homicide. Also killed in the incident were her 67-year-old mother, Janet Wimberly Samuels, and 69-year-old James Samuel.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office reported that a domestic dispute escalated, leading to the fatal shootings of all three individuals.
Following the killings, the primary suspect, identified as 29-year-old Caesar Zamien Lamar Crockett, Jr., fled the scene with his 2-year-old son, prompting an AMBER Alert. A manhunt ensued, which garnered significant media attention and concluded in the Tampa, Florida area. Crockett was apprehended after a tense six-hour standoff with police and Florida Highway Patrol Troopers. The child was found safe and was later reunited with his mother, Jamila French.
Crockett was subsequently charged with multiple counts of murder and other related offenses. In the wake of this tragedy, family and community members mourned the loss of Childs and the other victims. A private graveside service was held for Kotwang DeShasta Childs on April 10, 2020, at Mount Hope AME Church Cemetery in Bibb County, Georgia, where she was remembered as a joyful and kind-hearted person. The legal proceedings against Caesar Zamien Lamar Crockett, Jr. are ongoing.
