In the crisp autumn air of a Thursday evening in Macon, Georgia, the life of 16-year-old Alyssa Zari Jackson was tragically cut short on November 21, 2013. A student at Southwest High School, known for her vibrant and humorous personality, she was standing outside a house on Cedar Avenue with several other people shortly before 8:20 p.m. when a car drove past and shots were fired.
A single bullet struck Alyssa in the lower back.
Despite the chaos that erupted, Alyssa managed to run inside the house before she collapsed. She was rushed to the Medical Center of Central Georgia, but tragically succumbed to her injuries about 20 minutes after the shooting. In the same incident, a 13-year-old boy who was in a nearby vehicle was grazed by a bullet but survived his injuries.
The investigation into the senseless violence led authorities to a suspect. Dontavious 'Man Man' Mintz, who was 16 at the time, was arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and participation in criminal street gang activity in connection with Alyssa's death. Law enforcement officials believe the shooting was gang-related and that Alyssa was not the intended target. It was reported that two witnesses identified Mintz as one of two individuals who fired shots that evening. Mintz, an alleged member of the Bloomfield Crips street gang, eventually pleaded guilty to murder in the fatal shooting of Alyssa Jackson.
