In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Macon, Georgia, a family dispute turned fatal, leaving a daughter dead and a mother wounded. On May 14, 2017, 37-year-old Demetrice Bell was shot and killed in her home on Lakeshore Avenue. The tragic incident unfolded at approximately 3:00 a.m. following an argument that began when Demetrice returned home.
The conflict escalated, and her father, 67-year-old Benny Bell Jr., retrieved a handgun.
In the ensuing struggle, both Demetrice and her mother, 65-year-old Thelma Bell, were shot. Demetrice suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner's office. Thelma Bell was shot in the lower abdomen and was transported to the Navicent Health Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.
Following the shooting, Benny Bell Jr. was taken into custody by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently charged with one count of murder for the death of his daughter and one count of aggravated assault in the shooting of his wife. The investigation into the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation was initiated by local authorities.
