In the fall of 2022, a dispute between teenagers in Gwinnett County, Georgia, escalated into a tragedy that cut short the life of 17-year-old DeAndre Henderson. A student at Norcross High School, DeAndre left the campus during school hours on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. Just a short distance from the school grounds, on Technology Parkway in Peachtree Corners, an altercation awaited him. According to his mother, Kimberly Parks, her son had been lured away from the school with the intention of having a fight.
The confrontation turned deadly when a gun was introduced into the physical fight. Parks recounted that as her son was getting the better of his opponent, the other individual pulled out a firearm and shot him. Gwinnett County police officers responded to a 'person shot call' just after noon and found DeAndre with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died later that day, surrounded by his family. The shooting was determined to be an isolated incident and did not occur on school property.
In the days following the shooting, the Gwinnett County Police Department identified 18-year-old Brendon Young of Lawrenceville as the suspect. Charges of felony murder and aggravated assault were brought against him. Initially, his whereabouts were unknown, prompting a search. However, the manhunt was short-lived. On Sunday, October 30, 2022, four days after DeAndre's death, Brendon Young turned himself in to the authorities at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office in Florida. He was taken into custody and awaited extradition back to Gwinnett County to face the charges related to the death of DeAndre Henderson.
