In the quiet hours of an August evening in Schenectady, New York, Jennifer Ann Ostrander, a 31-year-old mother of seven, was enjoying time with friends on her porch. Her life, which she had dedicated to her children after overcoming personal struggles, was abruptly cut short on August 2, 2020. That night, a hail of bullets shattered the peace, and one fatally struck Jennifer in the head. She was not the intended target of this violent act.
The ensuing investigation revealed a grim story of a gang-related feud that had tragically claimed an innocent life. Prosecutors detailed a planned attack by members and affiliates of the Bloods street gang who were targeting rival Crips members. A caravan of vehicles arrived on Ostrander's street, and multiple gunmen opened fire on a group of men on her porch whom they mistakenly believed to be their rivals. While none of the intended targets were harmed, Jennifer Ostrander was killed by the gunfire.
The complex investigation led to the arrests of several individuals. Tito Garcia was identified by prosecutors as the man who fired the fatal shot and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, receiving a sentence of 20 years to life in prison. Daquan Smith, who was involved in planning the attack, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 18 years. Joel Johnson, one of the shooters, received a six-year prison sentence for criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.
Others involved faced charges as well. John White, the driver of the car carrying the shooters, and Tyricke Walker, who supplied a gun, both pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon. Marchello Rizzo was also arrested and charged with second-degree murder. A tragic footnote to the case was the death of a 17-year-old suspect, Caprist McBrown, who died of natural causes at a juvenile detention facility after being incarcerated for over two years. Authorities stated he had been an 'unwitting participant' in the crime.
