In LaGrange, Georgia, just two days before Christmas in 2018, the life of 18-year-old Iniko 'Niko' Hurston was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of December 23rd, while walking with two other people near the intersection of Troup and Jenkins Streets, a vehicle approached them. Multiple gunshots were fired from the car, striking Hurston in the chest. The vehicle, later described by police as a light-colored four-door car, possibly a white Honda Accord with tinted windows, quickly fled the scene. Emergency responders transported the young man to Well Star West Georgia Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the brazen daylight shooting led authorities to identify a suspect within days. Dontavious Morgan became the focus of the police inquiry, and warrants were issued for his arrest. For seven months, Morgan remained at large, eluding capture. The search for the alleged gunman concluded on June 25, 2019, when the Muscogee County SWAT Team apprehended him at his residence in Columbus, Georgia.
Following his arrest, Dontavious Morgan was transported to the Troup County Jail, where he was held without bond. He faced a series of serious charges related to the death of Niko Hurston, including one count of murder. The indictment also included three counts of aggravated assault, one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and a charge for violation of parole.
