In the early morning hours of June 5, 2021, the life of 67-year-old Lonnie Easter, an African American male, was tragically cut short in LaGrange, Georgia. Officers from the LaGrange Police Department responded to a call at a residence on DeGroat Street at approximately 2:42 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Easter lying in the doorway of the home, having sustained at least one gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response from emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation into the death of Lonnie Easter began without any immediate suspects in custody. The LaGrange Police Department appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an understanding of the events that transpired that morning. As their investigation progressed, authorities were able to gather enough evidence from the scene and through their subsequent efforts to identify a person of interest.
This led to the arrest of 24-year-old Donquavious Hammett of LaGrange. Hammett was subsequently charged with the murder of Lonnie Easter. Following his arrest, he was taken into custody to face legal proceedings for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting. The case then moved into the judicial system, as the authorities worked to bring a resolution for Lonnie Easter and his family.
