On an April afternoon in 2021, the quiet of Briley Road in Troup County was broken by the discovery of a tragic scene. Inside a vehicle that had been riddled with bullets, authorities found 52-year-old Alan Dale Huguley Sr. of LaGrange. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced deceased at the scene on April 18, 2021. For years, the case remained without a publicly identified suspect, a painful mystery for the family and community.
However, in a significant development more than four years later, the Troup County Sheriff's Office announced a breakthrough. In October 2025, Teresa Ann Williams was arrested and charged with the murder of Huguley Sr. While authorities confirmed the arrest, details about her alleged involvement in the long-unsolved case have not been released as the investigation continues. Williams is currently being held in the Troup County Jail.
In a separate and unrelated tragedy, Alan Dale Huguley Jr., a 30-year-old African American man, was fatally shot just before midnight on January 28, 2023. Huguley Jr. was sitting in the driver's seat of his car in the parking lot of the Quality Inn on Jameson Drive in LaGrange when two masked men approached and opened fire. An overwhelming barrage of at least twenty-one shots was fired into the vehicle, and Huguley Jr. sustained twelve gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the death of Alan Dale Huguley Jr. led police to identify two male suspects. One was described as a heavy-set individual wearing blue jeans, a black hoodie, and blue and white Air Jordan shoes, while the second was described as having a thin build and wearing all black with black and white tennis shoes. In June 2023, authorities arrested 24-year-old Lateef Jamil Moreland of Valdosta in connection with the murder. Evidence presented during his trial revealed that Moreland was a member of the Gangster Disciples street gang and had carried out the killing as a 'hit' to improve his standing within the organization. Surveillance footage from a convenience store captured Moreland unmasked on the day of the murder, wearing the same clothing as one of the shooters. Ballistics evidence linked a distinctive teal-colored Taurus handgun, seen in Moreland's possession in numerous social media images, to the crime scene. In May 2024, a Troup County jury found Lateef Jamil Moreland guilty of a string of charges, including Malice Murder, Felony Murder, and multiple violations of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. He was scheduled for sentencing in June 2024. The second suspect in the shooting has not been publicly identified.
