On New Year's Day in 2021, Keenen Armon Leonard, a 29-year-old male, was fatally shot in LaGrange, Georgia. He was sitting in his car in the driveway of his home, talking on the phone with his girlfriend. He had just returned with food for them. While on the call, his girlfriend heard gunshots and rushed outside to find Leonard deceased in the driver's seat. The incident was described as a senseless act of violence, as investigators found no connection between the victim and the shooter, and therefore no clear motive for the killing.
The investigation into Leonard's death led police to 26-year-old Camron Downing. Initially, Downing claimed that he was lost and had asked Leonard for directions, which led to an argument. He alleged that he shot Leonard in self-defense, believing Leonard was about to shoot him. However, the investigation contradicted his account. Leonard was found to be unarmed, and his girlfriend, who was on the phone with him at the time of the shooting, did not hear him speaking to anyone else.
Evidence gathered by law enforcement pointed to a Smith and Wesson. 357 Magnum revolver as the murder weapon, a type of firearm they had information to suggest Downing possessed. After admitting to the shooting, though maintaining it was in self-defense, Downing revealed the location of the revolver to investigators. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation later confirmed that the bullets that killed Keenen Leonard were fired from Downing's gun.
Camron Downing was convicted for the murder of Keenen Leonard. In December 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The district attorney for Troup County emphasized the senseless nature of the crime, stating that the sentence was just, given that Downing had taken a man's life for no apparent reason.
