In the quiet town of LaGrange, Georgia, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a violent encounter that initially seemed like a senseless act of brutality against a good Samaritan. James 'Jake' Ponder, a 24-year-old father of two, was fatally shot on the evening of Saturday, February 9, 2019. Initial reports suggested that Ponder had been killed after offering a ride to two strangers on Troup Street. He was with a friend at the time, who, in the aftermath of the shooting, drove Ponder to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
As the LaGrange Police Department delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding Ponder's death, a more complex and calculated plot began to emerge. The investigation revealed that the meeting was not a chance encounter. Instead, Ponder had arranged to meet with individuals on Troup Street to purchase a firearm. It was during this pre-arranged meeting that the two men he was meeting with attempted to rob him, an act that culminated in Ponder being shot in the back, hands, and leg. The two assailants then fled the scene, leaving Ponder's friend to rush him to the hospital.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect: 17-year-old Travis McFarland, also known as 'Slime Hext'. Further investigation revealed that McFarland was a member of the 'Bounty Hunter' set of the Bloods street gang. The motive for the crime was determined to be not only robbery but also an effort by McFarland to maintain and elevate his status within the gang. The term 'to slime' someone is reportedly common slang within the Bloods for robbing an individual.
In October 2022, after a week-long trial, a Troup County jury found Travis McFarland, then 21, guilty of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, and two violations of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, followed by an additional 75 years. While McFarland was convicted for his role in the murder of James 'Jake' Ponder, authorities indicated that another individual was also under indictment and awaiting trial in connection with the case, and the investigation into the potential involvement of others remained ongoing.
