In North Las Vegas on a Tuesday afternoon, June 20, 2023, the life of 19-year-old Deewayne LaDonn Edwards was tragically cut short. A recent graduate of Legacy High School, the young Black / African American man had dreams of playing football for the University of Nevada Las Vegas and eventually becoming a chiropractor. He was known for his love of dance, working out, and spending time with his friends and family, who remember him as a joyful person who loved to smile and joke around.
On
that fateful day, Edwards was walking home from a store when he became one of three victims in a triple shooting on West Centennial Parkway, between North Commerce Street and Kitamaya Street. While the other two 19-year-old victims managed to flee to a nearby residence and were later transported to University Medical Center with injuries they survived, Edwards died at the scene.
The North Las Vegas Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, but as of the days following the incident, no arrests had been made, and authorities were still searching for the person or persons responsible. Edwards's family was left in a state of shock, grieving the sudden and violent loss of a young man who they said had big plans for his life. His mother publicly pleaded for anyone with information to come forward to bring some measure of closure to their devastated family.
