In the early morning hours of Friday, May 28, 2021, a dispute that began at a local bar in Remerton, Georgia, spilled out into a nearby bank parking lot, ending in a double homicide. Jamar Antwan Walton, a 21-year-old male from Valdosta, was one of the two victims who lost their lives to gun violence that night. The other man killed was 23-year-old Sherrod Gore.
The incident unfolded around 1:45 a.m. in the parking area of CBC Bank, situated across from Lucky's Bar. Witnesses later reported that an altercation at the bar preceded the fatal shootings. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found both Walton and Gore with gunshot wounds. Gore was pronounced dead at the scene, while Walton was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the inquiry into the double homicide. Their investigation quickly led them to a suspect, 20-year-old Ronald Welsh of Valdosta. Just a week after the shooting, on Friday, June 4, 2021, Welsh was apprehended during a traffic stop in Cook County. He was a passenger in a white Nissan Altima driven by 19-year-old Shaniya Brooks, who was initially pulled over for speeding.
Ronald Welsh was arrested and faced a litany of charges in connection with the deaths of Jamar Walton and Sherrod Gore. These charges included two counts of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, and two counts of aggravated assault. He was also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Shaniya Brooks was also taken into custody and charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive.
