In a violent struggle on a Manhattan street, New York City Police Officer Edward E. Mitchell was fatally shot. At the age of 34, the male officer had served with the New York City Police Department for three years, assigned to the 34th Precinct.
The incident unfolded when Officer Mitchell and his partner tried to arrest a man suspected of robbing a luncheonette at 3809 10th Avenue. The suspect resisted violently.
As the officers grappled with the man, he managed to gain control of Officer Mitchell's partner's service weapon. The suspect fired three shots, striking Officer Mitchell in the chest.
While civilian witnesses rushed to Officer Mitchell's aid, his partner, along with an off-duty officer who was nearby, pursued the fleeing suspect. The chase ended about a block away as the suspect attempted to carjack a vehicle. The officers confronted the suspect and, in the ensuing encounter, shot and killed him. Officer Mitchell was transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife and son.
