In the late afternoon of June 28, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative calm outside the Polo Grounds Houses in Washington Heights. Trequan Wingfield, a 17-year-old male, was spending time with friends near his own residence at 2971 Frederick Douglass Blvd. when the shots rang out just before 4 p.m. His 16-year-old brother was with him at the time and managed to escape the spray of bullets unharmed.
At least one of the several shots fired struck Trequan in the chest.
Emergency responders arrived at the chaotic scene, where police would later mark the location of six shell casings on the ground. Paramedics rushed the critically wounded teenager to Harlem Hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to his wounds. In the aftermath, neighbors expressed their shock and sorrow, with one resident mentioning that the young man had a baby on the way. The motive for the shooting remained unclear to investigators in the initial stages of their inquiry.
The investigation quickly moved forward, and police began searching for a suspect described as wearing an all-blue outfit, possibly a tracksuit, who was seen fleeing southbound on Eighth Avenue after the incident. Their efforts led to a significant development within days. A 16-year-old male was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Due to his age, authorities did not publicly release the suspect's name. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon for his alleged role in the death of Trequan Wingfield.
