On that fateful Tuesday afternoon, just after school
dismissal, a dispute that began the previous day between two female students escalated near the corner of Spring and Dominick streets. Brown, described as a peacemaker, attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation. As the conflict intensified, one of the girls reportedly called her brother for backup. Shortly after, two individuals arrived on a Citi Bike, and one of them opened fire into the crowd of students. Brown was struck in the head and thigh. He collapsed in a nearby walkway and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident, which police later described as stemming from 'just dumb stuff,' sent shockwaves through the community, a neighborhood that had not experienced a shooting in over a year.
The investigation into Mahki Brown's death led to the arrests of two suspects. On May 17, 2024, the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended 19-year-old Henry Thomas in Harlem. He was subsequently charged with murder. The search for the second suspect continued, and on June 12, 2024, a 16-year-old male was also taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. His name has been withheld due to his age. It is alleged that Thomas was one of the individuals on the Citi Bike who fired at Brown.
