In the early hours of a spring morning in East Harlem, a dispute tragically cut short the life of a young man from Queens. Steven Vasquez, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was visiting the Wagner Houses on East 124th Street on April 17, 2016. An argument broke out, and in the ensuing violence, Vasquez was shot in the head. The incident occurred around 2:11 a.m.
in a third-floor hallway of the building, a place that would become a grim crime scene.
First responders rushed to the scene and found the gravely wounded Vasquez. He was swiftly transported to Harlem Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. The news of his untimely death sent ripples of grief through his community in Flushing and beyond.
The investigation into the shooting began immediately. Police officers who responded to the scene apprehended a suspect, 22-year-old James Seabrook. At the time of his arrest, Seabrook was found to be in possession of a. 45 caliber handgun, and he was initially charged with weapon possession. As the investigation progressed and evidence was gathered, the charges against him were upgraded.
While incarcerated at Rikers Island on the initial weapons charge, James Seabrook was officially charged with the murder of Steven Vasquez on May 19, 2016. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced the ongoing weapon possession charge.
