This event marked the second time in approximately a month that a 16-year-old in Troy had been killed by gunfire, shaking the community.
The
investigation into Jaylin's death swiftly led to a shocking and heartbreaking development: the arrest of his own older brother, 21-year-old Jatae Gourrier-Lewis. The dispute that ended in tragedy reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over a gun. Jatae claimed he did not want his younger brother to be in possession of a firearm, and the ensuing altercation escalated to the point of the fatal shooting. Though Jatae would later claim the shooting was accidental, the precision of the shot led the court to believe otherwise.
Jatae Gourrier-Lewis, an aspiring rapper known as 'Taygunz,' was initially charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. However, in a turn of events, he later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. During the court proceedings, Jatae expressed remorse, stating that he did not intend to kill his brother and was haunted by nightmares of the incident. In March 2023, Jatae Gourrier-Lewis was sentenced to 20 years in state prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
