On the night of March 26, 2022, Maurice D. Miller, a 46-year-old man from Troy, New York, was fatally shot. The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. on the back patio of The Bradley, a downtown bar on Fourth Street. First responders arrived at the scene to find Miller with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Another man was also shot and seriously wounded during the incident.
The owner of the bar, who considered Miller a friend, described him as a 'charismatic and dynamic individual' and believed he was targeted by someone he knew. An investigation involving the Troy and Schenectady police departments, parole officers, the Capital Region Crime Analysis Center, and the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force led to an arrest in August 2022.
Thaddeus Steed, then 31 years old, was indicted by a grand jury and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Miller's death. Prosecutors alleged that Steed was the individual who fired the shot that killed Miller. However, Steed's defense attorney argued that another person was responsible for the shooting.
The trial took place in Rensselaer County Court. During the trial, it was mentioned that a cousin of Miller's had been killed in 2012. After deliberating for less than two and a half hours, the jury acquitted Thaddeus Steed of all charges in May 2023. As of the latest reports, the investigation into Maurice Miller's death is considered ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
