In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 15, 2000, David L. Butler, a 42-year-old African American man, was found dead in the parking lot of a car dealership in the 1800 block of Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia. Butler, an assistant managing editor for the military newspaper Stars and Stripes, was walking home from the Court House Metro station after his late-night shift when he was attacked just two blocks from his apartment in the Colonial Village area.
