On January 15, 1971, James "Jay" Dial Jr., a 16-year-old high school student, was tragically shot and killed while walking home in Arlington, Virginia. The incident occurred on the night of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Dial was walking along South Kenmore Street when a car pulled over and someone inside shot him in the back as he walked away. He managed to stagger to a nearby house and seek help, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
