A student at Wakefield High School, Dial was known as an athlete and a musician, playing football, basketball, wrestling, and playing the drums.
He was the only boy among six siblings.
That evening, as he walked along South Kenmore Street after leaving his girlfriend's house, a car pulled up beside him. After a brief interaction with the occupants, Dial started to walk away. It was then that someone from inside the vehicle shot him in the back. Despite his severe injury, he managed to stagger to a nearby house on South Kenmore Street, where he collapsed on the porch seeking help. He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In the aftermath of the shooting, fear and suspicion gripped the predominantly Black community of Green Valley. Rumors quickly spread that the Ku Klux Klan was responsible, with many believing the murder was a violent message against the movement to establish Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a national holiday. The killing was seen by some as a targeted act of racial violence during a period of significant civil unrest in the country.
Arlington police investigated the homicide and, later that year, arrested a suspect in connection with the murder. However, due to a lack of sufficient evidence, the individual was later released. For decades, the case of James Jay Dial Jr.'s murder has remained unsolved. No other suspects have been publicly identified, and no one has been convicted for the crime. The Arlington Police Department continues to list it as a cold case, and Dial's family has continued to hope for answers and closure.
