In the winter of 2022, the life of a Troy teenager, known for his ability to light up a room, was abruptly cut short by an act of violence that reverberated through his community. Anthony M. Christopher Jr., a 16-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 5, 2022, during a home invasion at his residence on River Street. That evening, at least two armed individuals forced their way into the first-floor apartment where Christopher lived with his mother and younger brothers.
The intruders opened fire, striking Christopher multiple times in the torso and once in the head. Another 16-year-old who was present in the apartment was wounded in the leg but survived. Christopher was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Anthony, an aspiring rap artist and entrepreneur known to friends and family as “Tookie,” “Big Don,” and “Ant Daklikka,” attended the Troy High School Sunset Program. His obituary described him as a fun-filled, loving, and loyal individual who was a class clown and a practical joker, but most importantly, his mother's best friend. His sudden death was mourned as a senseless loss due to gun violence, leaving behind his parents, siblings, and a host of relatives and friends.
A difficult and multifaceted investigation followed the shooting, involving Troy Police, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals, and the NYPD. In May 2022, authorities announced the arrests of three suspects. William Webb, 28, of Brooklyn; Ramel Gulley, 27, of Schenectady; and Kahlil Clay, 19, of Brooklyn were all indicted on charges of second-degree murder. Webb and Clay were apprehended in Brooklyn, while Gulley was already in custody on unrelated charges.
The legal proceedings against the three men concluded with guilty verdicts. In March 2024, a jury found William Webb and Ramel Gulley guilty of second-degree murder. The following month, Kahlil Clay was also convicted of second-degree murder in a separate trial. All three men faced a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison for their roles in the killing of Anthony Christopher Jr.
