On what should have been a day of celebration, Patrick Maurice Dixon, a 31-year-old man, was fatally shot in Severn, Maryland, just hours after being released from prison. The tragic events unfolded on April 1, 2016, cutting short a life that was just beginning a new chapter. Dixon had been planning to attend a homecoming party that his sister had arranged for him that evening.
Earlier in the day, his father had lent him his truck so he could check in with his parole officer.
After the meeting, Patrick had even picked out an outfit for the party. However, before he could make it home, an altercation in a parking lot in the 8100 block of Meade Village Road turned deadly. Following an argument, a man identified as Daquan Darryl Pack, then 22 years old, shot Dixon multiple times and fled the scene. Anne Arundel County Police officers found Dixon bleeding in the parking lot, and he was rushed to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
For a month, Pack evaded authorities, who considered him armed and dangerous. A warrant for his arrest was issued, charging him with first-degree murder, among other offenses. Several witnesses to the shooting identified Pack as the gunman. He was eventually apprehended, and in March 2017, an Anne Arundel County Circuit Court jury convicted him of first-degree murder and related handgun charges.
In July 2017, Daquan Darryl Pack, then 23, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The State's Attorney for Anne Arundel County described Pack as a repeat offender who consistently resorted to extreme violence and expressed gratitude to the judge for ensuring he could no longer harm the community.
