On a Thanksgiving Day that should have been filled with community and celebration, tragedy struck in Severn, Maryland, irrevocably altering the lives of many. On November 26, 2020, Louis Guy Newman III, a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot following a community football game. The festive atmosphere of the holiday was shattered by an altercation that escalated into gunfire, leaving Newman and two other men wounded.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Newman succumbed to his injuries.
The Anne Arundel County Police responded to reports of the shooting in the 1700 block of Meade Village Circle at approximately 1:37 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene. Newman was found on a pathway next to a large field where the football game had taken place. Another victim, a 30-year-old man, was found nearby with life-threatening injuries, while a third victim, a 29-year-old man, had sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was located at a hospital in Baltimore.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police initiated a search of the area. During this search, they observed a man, later identified as 19-year-old Keith Irving Brown Eldridge of Glen Burnie, fleeing the scene while clutching his waistband, suggesting he was armed. After a foot chase, Eldridge was apprehended, and a loaded handgun was discovered along his escape route. He was subsequently charged with failure to obey a lawful order and several firearm-related offenses. At the time of his arrest, detectives were still investigating his potential direct involvement in the triple shooting.
The investigation into the death of Louis Guy Newman III was extensive, involving homicide detectives, K-9 units, and evidence collection teams. The police characterized the shooting as a targeted incident rather than a random act of violence. An autopsy confirmed that Newman’s death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. The community was further shaken when, during a vigil for Newman, a man named Mark Anthony Artison was arrested for firing a gun into the air.
