On the evening of June 14, 2024, 34-year-old Keion McKinney, a male resident of Severn, Maryland, was fatally shot in what police have described as a targeted attack. The incident occurred shortly before 7:20 p.m. in the backyard of a townhome in the 1600 block of Meade Village Circle. Authorities reported that McKinney had just exited a townhome when he was confronted by a male suspect who shot him and then fled the scene.
When officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department arrived, they found McKinney suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into McKinney's death led detectives to identify a suspect in not only his murder but also another homicide that occurred later in the month. On September 10, 2024, police announced the arrest of 18-year-old Deondre Tywon Sharps of Baltimore. Sharps was charged with the murders of both Keion McKinney and 34-year-old Joshua Ray Holland, who was killed on June 29 in Brooklyn Park.
Authorities have stated that there appears to be no connection between the two victims. Investigators believe the two fatal shootings are unrelated, aside from having the same alleged perpetrator. At the time of the announcement of the charges, Sharps was already incarcerated in Baltimore on other matters. The investigation into the homicides remains ongoing, and police have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
